Kissa Shukai « Pseudo Free »

« Eric Dolphy once said, « When you hear music, after it’s over, it’s gone in the air. You can never capture it again. » In this sense, my musical endeavors are the result of a futile attempt to recapture the shock I experienced when I first heard Charlie Parker.

This work is composed of a collage of various musical styles, with a primary focus on free improvisation. Here, the spontaneity of improvisation is deconstructed, either repeated through a MIDI keyboard or spontaneously cut and rearranged in ways unintended by the performers. It could be argued that this method of expression transposes into music the techniques once employed by Martin Margiela in the field of fashion. Created in early 2022, this album serves as a modest rebuttal to the supremacy of free improvisation purists and the Eurocentrism that pervades the current free improvisation scene. »
